Travel Notes, Chapter#6, The Fjaerland fjord and Boyabreen glacier

Our tour started from Balestrand pier, it was a connected tour, we should catch our Bergen connection right after we arrive the Balestrand.  Our round-trip on the Fjaerland fjord package tour were including  visits of Norwegian Glacier Museum and the glacier Boyabreen.  It was a fantastic half day!

In a cloudy and cool day our tour started in time. We were a small group of people but from different places of the world such as;  Australia, Spain, USA, UK and  we were from Turkey among other local people.
We passed through the amazing places, lonely fjords with wonderful colors, wonderful shades,  seagulls, little towns, little houses....
The weather conditions were  changeable even though it was first week of July.
I wonder winter time in these fjords, how they provide their daily requirements? They must be so much isolated during winter time, indeed.
We have noticed a tunnel construction, most probably they will connect two sides.

They are familiar and experienced to drill the tunnel, and suspension bridges between islands, and sides of fjords, where the geography is suitable, we saw different applications during our round trip.
When we arrived to Fjaerland, the glacier bus  was waiting us. Our guide was a lovely young lady who is a student in Bergen. She told detailed information about the museum and glacier, including some other important stories related with the area.
We’ve visited  the Norwegian Glacier Museum. It is a small museum but visual exhibits are well organized, you get to see how the glaciers have influenced us and the climate throughout history. The museum's stated purpose is to "collect, create and disseminate knowledge about glaciers and climate".
It provides information about the glacier Jostedalsbreen and the Jostedalsbreen National Park and also houses the Ulltveit-Moe Climate Centre.

The Fjaerland fjord is a tributary of the Sognefjord and is also known as "The green fjord". Fjaerland is the village where fjords meet glaciers and you can get up close to Jostedalen glacier, the largest glacier in continental Europe.
By the way, let me define what is a glacier! A glacier is snow and ice in motion. Glaciers form at those localities where more snow falls in winter than melts in summer. An ice mass build up over time and will start to move gravity when it is more than 20 meters thick.
It is so obvious that, the land shape has been shaped by glaciers. Towering mountains and U-shaped valleys surround large delta areas formed by the accumulation of sediment supplied by the glacier rivers. Several thousand years old of deltas formed at a time of higher sea level can now be seen as terraces in the valleys.
It will be better to give a short information for Jostedal Glacier has a total area of 487 square kilometers. The highest point is Høgste Breakulen at 1,957 meters above sea level. Branches of the glacier reach down into the valleys, for instance Bøyabreen in Fjærland and Nigardsbreen, both at 300 metres  above sea level. The thickest part of the glacier is 600 meters.
The glacier is maintained by the high snowfall rates in the region, not the cold temperatures. This means the glacier has high melting rates. The Jostedalsbreen has around 50 glacier arms such as the Nigardsbreen and Tunsbergdalsbreen in Jostedal, the Briksdalsbreennear Olden, the Bøyabreen by Fjærland.
Boyabreen is one of about 25 glacier tongues branching off from the plateau of Jostedalsbreen. The main glacier feed Boyabreen. Whether Boyabreen grows or retracts depends on the surplus of snow and ice at the top of the plateau. The glaciers will grow if more snow is falling during winter than what is melting away in the summer. The response time from the main glacier down to Boyabreen is approximately 3 years!

Ice breaks loose from the front of Boyabreen all though summer. Chunks of ice falling into the glacier river may be carried into the lake below.  We were lucky to be able to see even though big pieces of ice floatings in the water. We’ve learned that a big ice block crashed down just before our arrival.  We couldn’t get a chance to see amazing crashing activity  but ice floatings were swimming on the surface.
This is “living” ice which is different from the kind of ice we produce by deep freezing water. From the outset, the glacier ice is composed of many snow crystals which have been fused and grown larger. For this reason, living ice contains air filled channels.
Another important info is that in 2012, the glacier arm Briksdalsbreen lost 50 meters of ice in a few months. More recent measurements now show that Briksdalsbreen retreated 146 meters  in 2006, and could be in danger of breaking away from the upper ice field. Ice climbing has now been terminated because of this event. One of the serious remedy of global warming!
As I’ve  learned a sad story that something hiding in the glacier; in 1972 a small airplane crashed on Jostedalsbreen. The pilot was killed, and his body was removed from the aircraft. The plane was gradually covered by snow and became embedded in the glacier during winter. Since the glacier  moves slowly there is a possibility that the remnants of the aircraft will be transported downhill and reappear when the ice melts. Calculations based on available data indicate that the wreck will some day will appear near the top of Boyabreen!
After visiting this amazing places and learned much more details for the global warming causes and its effects, I realized once again that we have to protect our old world as much as we can. At least, there are lots of things  that we can do, individually!
So, we said good bye to this lovely small village to go back to Balestrand to catch our ferry for Bergen.
This photo reminds me a stanza I've read
"Seagulls fly high overhead,
Seagulls fly high as  if near the ocean"
I believe that these beautiful seagulls are always escort sailors!

Travel Notes, Norway, Chapter#5, Sognefjord-Balestrand, crazy things

Now, let me tell you some another key point from our Balestrand visit. After a long and busy day, we were hanging around the pier area to wait our dinner time but I must admit that all of us starving  and fantastic smells indicated us one point, Pilgrim Restaurant.
Glad that they had a table for four of us. We immediately canceled our previous reservation and started to review their menu.
When we entered to I couldn’t control myself where to look, what to see among all those wonderful vintage pieces.Right  after ordering things I started to take photos of all those amazing pieces.

They have two storey building but their new  top floor crystal dome amazing, it  gives a fantastic view of the mountain and fjord.

We also welcomed by the owner Bjorg Bjoberg, she is a retired school teacher but she is a multi skilled artist.

It was her birthday, she made our dinner so special at her special day, we’ll never forget. As we agreed with her, there is no coincidences!
She is a real keeper like me but her collection  amazing items, another most important thing is she  remembers the story of each item and it belongs to whom.

When we were  starving her friendly staff, young Ladies started service. We were two couples, we really enjoyed our time there.
Thousands  miles away from home, while experiencing white nights to meet with a special person was so nice, sharing almost same interests, same hobbies get people together. I would like to repeat once again “All you need is love” as John Lennon said so.
If you go to Balestrand,  Pilgrim Restaurant must be visited to meet with her&family and to see their colorful world. I believe that those kind of people makes our world peaceful with their lovely colors, whenever they touch they turn it a different beauty. Thank you Bjorg, we had so special time at your place during your birthday. Hope one day we get a chance to see each other again!

When we were leaving Balestrand, I  thought all those beautiful people that we've met there, I waved them quietly and wished them lots of happiness.

I would like to share another nice memory, I noticed a shop with Handcraft sign at night when we were going back to hotel after dinner. I went to see display window with a hope if it is open . I must admit that to get adopted white night is not so easy you may confuse your time easily, it was from one of  that moments for me! Of course it was closed, but next morning after breakfast, what I did? Directly, I went there...It is a lovely shop, sells craft materials, they make lovely patchwork quilts in their studio. Also they do knitting branch, too. They knit lovely things with those good yarns.

By the way, there were several big tables that they were selling second hand items, some of them were antiques, some of them vintage and brand new things, too. I love bronze candles, several  pairs of  poinsettia form bronze candles were waiting me there.  Now, I have one a wonderful candle set.  I’m so sad that I couldn’t chat with all those ladies who run the store and studio, non of them knows English. I’m sure that they all know full information about those second hand items. Anyway, I couldn’t learn who was the owner, how old those candles, etc. But, I’m so happy with them and they found a good home, I think;-))
Another key point from our travel, longest fjord and glacier tour later....

Travel Notes, Norway, Chapter#4, Balestrand

Balestrand, an idyllic village on the main Sognefjord with its narrow fjord branches and scenic and lush mountain landscape. If you ask me describe Balestrand with a few words all I can say, high mountains with snowy peaks, deep fjords and peace and silence. This is also my explanation for the entire fjord tours.
Sognefjord is the longest fjord of Norway, its Balestand area  has welcomed tourists since the early 1800s, it  has inspired artists from all over the world, because it is known for its  wonderful light and breathtaking nature all year around. Artists from all over the world have traveled here for inspiration, brought their sketch books or canvases to capture the extraordinary light.

Those visitors left their mark on the architecture of the many villas and large painting collections in some hotels that they stayed for long terms. The wonderful light and breathtaking nature still inspire artists from all over the world.

Our Hotel Midtnes, was a nice building with wonderful vintage decorated lobby and living area with fantastic fjord views.
It is a boutique hotel,  our simple decorated room was at first floor corner, had a big enough balcony with fjord view and mountain view...

Wonderful fjord view from one living room.
This is another living room with another breath taking view.

The decoration of living areas were so impressive for me as being a vintage lover person.
There are many pianos at different holes, so many wonderful painting on the walls, vintage doilies on the table and end tables...

This photos show wonderful view of a window from different angles.

So many wonderful details to feel a totally different, cozy atmosphere feeling like at home but  with an amazing fjord view. I sat at their lovely decorated saloon to watch amazing white night sun till mid night, it was a fantastic experience.
I wish I could have more to time stay there longer. Hope to go there again. If you’re looking for serenity Balestrand is perfect address for you.  I'm unable to upload more photos for this blogging, more details about  Balestrand later....

Travel Notes,Norway, Chapher#3, Flam

We arrived Flam as the last destination of Flamsbana,

Flam  is a very small village and when I first saw it I thought, how it is a lovely place. It does have a lot of tourists from cruise ships, but mainly the crowds are around the pier and souvenir shops. After a long touring, visiting shops and small museum we had a some sneaks in pier area. Afterwords went to Fretheim Hotel to have coffee. It was a lovely day, hotel garden was so nice while sun was shining and drizzling time to time. I wondered how this hotel and its surroundings look like in the winter time, especially with Christmas decorations.

When we are touring in pier area, I noticed a small private museum in a store, of
course I loved all those oldies. I loved the decoration of small room, all those dusty, oldies were so pretty.

This lovely small town must so quiet and lonely in winter time. It was so crowded and busy in this  sunny day.

There are many things to do in Flam, one of them is fjord safari. Teams get ready and leave pier as scheduled.

When we started to plan our journey we also checked cruise tour programs. We checked cruises and their schedules and decided to make our own program to have more free time and visit places freely as we wish. One of them was cruise  Koninsdam. It was a surprice for us to see it there at Flam pier because we've totally forgotten it and its program.
We got a chance to review how are things works in these cruises, how passengers have to be acted according to program, etc.

We are sure once again that big cruise tours are not our kind, it is impossible to feel the nature, serenity in that big vessel with thousands of people. We like small scale, more independent tours.

We left Flam in the afternoon with our scheduled Norled express boat, “Vingtor”.

In that cool and windy weather we were all on the board to take photos and breath that amazing freshness.
If you ask me describe fjords with a few words, I say, peaceful, magnificient, green, lonely, and blue. It gives you different feelings and rejuvenate with amazing nature.
Our destination will be Balestrand, I'll tell it later....

Travel Notes, Norway Chapter#2, Myrdal-Flam

So, our second day started so early, in Bergen, Norway.  In the morning our train adventure begun, all early risers were waiting departure with great excitement.
We started our journey from Bergen by Bergen Railways changed to Flamsbana scenic railway at Myrdal station.  No reserved seats, from the beginning to end of the journey!
Myrdal Station is a mountain railway station and junction, located on the Bergen Line  regional mainline inAurland, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. The  railway station is also the upper terminal of the Flam Line local railway, which ascends from the valley floor of theSognefjord to the mountain-top junction, providing a vital public transport link, but deriving a majority of its passengers through tourism. Most passengers using Myrdal station are changing trains between the two lines.
All those little villages breath taking fjords views, waterfalls were amazing.

There are many  small stations so nice, peaceful, quiet places!

The most important issue of this The Flam Railway adventure is the train stops at Kjosfossen in the mid way, which is a very impressive waterfall.
You’re able to get off the train to see view and take photos. But be sure that several hundred people will get off the train at this stop! I know this is only once of life time experience for those who come from so different places, from other continents but at least they can be more respectful to others who also tries to take photos or videos. I hope there must be a solution to avoid this disorder.
Kjosfossen is a waterfall located in Aurland municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The waterfall is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway. Its total fall is around 225 meters. There is a small power station on the waterfall which is used to power the Flam Line railway.

When we were trying to take photos a music and lyric performance of an actress dressed as legendary Huldra (a seductive forest creature in Scandinavian folklore)  started, she was dancing on the that old shack with a wonderful music, foggy weather and water particles from the water fall was making her performance more interesting.
We've learned that this is only summer time tourist entertainment and the Huldra actresses are all students from the Norwegian ballet school.
But, I must admit that the crowd and noisy of tourist groups doesn’t allow you to take photo and enjoy the sound of the waterfall and music. I still couldn't find the name of the song!
It was raining but we felt the mist from the waterfall, it was refreshing.

If you do this journey yourself as we did, there are some things you should be prepared for. Follow cruise tour programs and select a free time other than high season.
Anyway, it was an enjoyable trip!
It was really beautiful ride takes you through spectacular Norwegian scenery with snowy peak mountains, green valleys, water falls and of course  lush fjords landscapes. To able to see both  mountain and fjord on the same journey and the train follows the river all the way up is an amazing experience.
Our Flam tour and  Balestrand journey is later.....
